Moorhead Community Education provides learning opportunities for citizens of all ages. The district's Community Education programs range from Early Childhood Family Education classes for young children and their parents to Adult Basic Education classes.

Other Community Education programs provide activities for adults with disabilities, programs for older adults and after-school and summer youth activities. Community Education publishes monthly issues of KIDsource, a compilation of activities for K-6 students.

Community Education Enrichment Classes

In the area, Moorhead Community Education is well-known for its large selection of adult enrichment classes. Courses in arts and crafts, cooking, computers and recreation are offered in the fall, winter and spring. Annually about 9,600 area residents enroll in more than 1000 Community Education classes.

Adults with disabilities in the CHOICES program may register for any of the enrichment classes in the catalog or participate in one of the recreational and enrichment programs and classes specifically designed for adults with disabilities.

Early Childhood Family Education

Early Childhood Family Education, a program of Moorhead Community Education, offers classes and activities for parents and their children. At Probstfield Early Learning Center, in rooms designed to enhance early learning, parents and children can take classes and participate in special family events. Both parenting and child classes are taught by licensed professionals.

Children should be registered for Early Childhood Screening between their third and fourth birthdays. At the screening, early childhood specialists observe the children's vision, hearing, speech and development.

All children must be screened before entering kindergarten. Early screening will help identify any conditions that might hamper a child's learning and assists parents in taking steps to help the child.

The Kindergarten Readiness Program offers informative newsletters, kindergarten orientation classes, bus safety training and classroom visits, so parents and their children can get the information they need to confidently enter the elementary school system.

Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education, a program of Moorhead Community Education, offers day and evening classes for adults who haven't finished high school or need to learn English. Preparation classes for those who want to obtain their General Educational Diploma are offered.

Basic skills instruction in reading, writing, math, and life skills is available. Students who need to improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills can attend English as a Second Language classes.

GED Testing

Moorhead Community Education offers GED testing to anyone who is 19 years of age or older, not currently enrolled in high school and a resident of Minnesota. Those who are not 19 years old must apply for an age waiver.

The GED tests are five tests in the areas of writing skills, science, mathematics, social studies and reading. Questions in each test require the use of general knowledge and thinking skills.

To take the GED tests register at least 24 hours before the test is given. Bring a photo ID and the test fee of $15 per test to the Community Education Office, Room 313, Probstfield Center for Education, 2410 14th St. S., Moorhead.

Older Adult Programs

Specific classes designed for the unique interests of adults ages 55 and above are available. Older adults can also participate in the walking club at Concordia College, the Breakfast Clubs for Older Adults or one of the other special events.

Community Education is working together with the Moorhead Senior Center to offer a wide variety of educational and social opportunities. Community Education offers AARP Safety Driving Program classes for participants age 50 and above at the Moorhead Senior Center.

Youth Service

Community Education's Youth Service program coordinates service-learning projects and after-school activities for students. Service-learning teaches the value of community service to students in the Moorhead School District. The district was recently selected as one of six model districts for service-learning in Minnesota.

CHOICES for Adults with Disabilities

The CHOICES program provides several classes modified to meet the needs of adults with disabilities. Program participants can also attend social club events and other special events.

Classroom Driver Education

The Moorhead Public School's Driver Education classroom program is run through Community Education. This program is open to high school students age 15 or older living in ISD 152 Register through the Community Education office, Probstfield Center for Education, 2410 14th St. S., 284-3400. Information sheets and registration forms can also be picked up at the Moorhead High Activities office. Financial aid is not available.

This 30-hour class prepares students for their instructional permit. Classes meet at Moorhead High School.

Steps for persons under 18 years of age to get a Minnesota driver's license:

1. Complete 30 hours of classroom instruction. Community Education classes are offered in September, January, April & June. The other businesses in town that offer classroom instruction are A to Z Driving School and FM Driver Training.

2. Register for behind-the-wheel training. Register with a private vendor and receive the blue card. The blue card is issued by the vendor providing the behind-the-wheel instruction and is required to take the state permit test.

3. Take and pass the state permit test. Students registering for permit test must provide: one primary ID, one secondary ID, and the blue card. Primary ID options: state issued ID, current passport or state certified birth certificate. Secondary ID options: Social Security card, student ID with picture and ID number or certified school transcript. Upon passing permit test, paying $9.50 and parent/guardian signature, students receive their permit. Moorhead Driver Exam Office, 1300 15th Ave N. Hours: Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

4. Complete behind-the-wheel training. Student must have permit before they can start behind-the-wheel instruction.

5. Complete the six-month practice period. Minnesota law now requires drivers to have a permit for six months before taking the road test.

6. Pass road test. To take road test, student must be 16 years old and have had their permit for six months. Drive on provisional license until qualifications for full license are met.

Register Early

Register early so you won't be disappointed. Often classes reach the maximum enrollment early. Also, classes depend on minimum enrollments. Don't take a chance your class may be cancelled.

Are you in?

Yes - unless you hear from us. No class confirmations are sent. Simply show up for the class and enjoy!

Inclement Weather

If Moorhead schools are cancelled, Community Education classes are cancelled as well. Tune into radio or television stations: WDAY, KVLY, KXJB, KFNW, KLTA, KVOX, KFGO, KCCD and public information radio - 1610 am.

Special Accommodations

If you have needs requiring special services (i.e. access to elevators, sign language interpreters, etc.), indicate your need on the personal data or call Community Education, 284-3400.

Scholarship Information

A limited number of scholarships are available to school district residents demonstrating extreme financial need. These scholarships include Community Education classes, activities, and the fee for taking the GED. It does not apply to Driver Education. Application forms are available at the Community Education office.

UCare Minnesota Members Discount

All UCare Minnesota members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. Members will need to include their UCare ID number when registering.

Senior High Students

Students are welcome to register for classes that don’t have an age limit.

Cancellations

Cancellation Policy
If you have to cancel, we can give a full credit voucher or refund only if you notify the Community Education Office (218-284-3400) at least 24 hours prior to the first class meeting. Refunds after a class has begun will be given only in extreme circumstances and will be subject to a $5 processing fee. In the unlikely event your class is cancelled, we will give a full refund.
